Navigating Benidorm, Spain as a Travel Destination

At the end of the summer of 2024, on our way to interview a famous Bulgarian artist at his studio in Altea, we passed through the beautiful town of Benidorm and couldn't resist taking a quick dip in the azure waters of 'Peacock Island' (as Benidorm was once known).

Just an hour from Alicante and close to Valencia, Benidorm is one of the most visited destinations on the east coast of Spain. In 2023 alone, over 2,766,366 travellers, 3.8% more than in 2019, from all over the world flocked to the famous Costa Blanca region to experience its charms.

Known as the "New York of the Mediterranean", Benidorm seamlessly blends modern attractions, breathtaking views and a welcoming atmosphere. From family-friendly activities to luxurious experiences, this coastal town never disappoints.

Benidorm has something for everyone, no matter your budget. 

As a travel family, we can tell you with confidence that: Book early to secure the best deals on Benidorm's beachfront hotels, which are the most popular, especially during the summer months. If you want a quieter stay, go off-season. Prices are lower then, and the beaches are less crowded. Book at least three to four months in advance to get the best rates, especially for mid-range and luxury hotels.

• Luxury Hotels: For those looking for a high-end experience, Benidorm's luxury hotels are mostly located near Levante Beach. These hotels offer stunning sea views, rooftop pools and excellent restaurants. Prices start at around 200 euros per night.

• Mid-range hotels: If you want comfort without spending too much, mid-range hotels near Poniente Beach are a great option. These hotels offer good value with cozy rooms and great locations. Prices typically range from $80 to $150 per night.

• Budget friendly options: For travelers on a budget, there are many affordable hostels and inns in the old city area. You can enjoy a stay for as little as €30 to €70 per night while being close to local restaurants and shops.

When you book a flight to Benidorm, you'll land at Alicante-Elche airport, about 45 minutes from the city. 

Here are some flight options depending on where you're coming from:

• UK: Direct flights from London take about 2.5 hours and cost between £40 and £150.

• USA: Flights from major cities such as New York or Miami usually require a layover, with total travel time around 10-12 hours. Prices range from $500 to $900.

• Germany: Direct flights from Berlin or Munich take about 3 hours and cost between €50 and €200.

• France: Flights from Paris are quick, about 2 hours, and fares usually range from €50 to €150.

☝️Booking in advance and using some discount code to your subscribed airline, especially during the high season, will help to secure the best prices.

Benidorm doesn't have its own airport, so visitors fly into Alicante Elche Airport (ALC), which is about 45 minutes away by car. Alicante Airport is well connected with many international flights and offers easy access to Benidorm. 

Once you land, there are several convenient ways to get to the city:

• Taxis: A taxi ride to Benidorm takes approximately 45 minutes and costs around €75.

• Buses: The ALSA bus service runs regularly from the airport to Benidorm, with tickets costing between €10 and €15.

•  Shuttles: For a more personalized transfer, shared and private shuttle services are available, costing between €20 and €30 per person.

• Trains: While there is no direct train from the airport, you can catch a train from Alicante city center to Benidorm after a short bus or tram ride from the airport.

Benidorm follows Central European Time (CET), which is 1 hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1).

During the summer months the city switches to Central European Summer Time (CEST), which is 2 hours ahead of UTC (UTC+2).

If you're visiting from another time zone, be sure to adjust your clocks, especially during the changeover to Daylight Saving Time!
