In a major breakthrough, the National Police in Madrid have arrested a fugitive who was on Europe's Most Wanted list for his involvement in drug trafficking and organised crime.
The man, of Albanian origin, had been sentenced in Belgium to more than 29 years in prison on 13 serious charges, including drug trafficking, leading a criminal organisation and forging documents.
The arrest follows an extensive investigation in coordination with the Belgian authorities, which culminated on 12 September. The fugitive headed a notorious Albanian-Kosovar criminal network responsible for large-scale cannabis cultivation and trafficking, which generated more than €4 million through illegal activities.
Using false identities and evading authorities across Europe, the fugitive had implemented tight security measures to avoid capture. His arrest in Madrid marks the end of a lengthy manhunt involving three European Arrest Warrants.
This high-profile arrest is another success in the ongoing fight against international drug trafficking and organised crime.
