Spain is booming! International tourism in Spain is on the rise, with more and more visitors flocking to the country and spending more money than ever before. This surge is great news for the modernization and sustainability of the tourism sector! It means higher spending per visitor and a broader distribution of tourist destinations.
International tourist expenditure in Spain grew by an incredible 21.8% in the first five months of 2024, surpassing 43.2 billion euros.
In May, Spain welcomed 9.3 million international tourists, which is an 11.5% increase from May 2023.
Tourists spent 11.687 billion euros in May, which is a 19.7% rise from the previous year. On average, visitors spent 1,263 euros in May, which is up 7.3%. They spent 204 euros a day, which is an 8.6% increase. The average stay was six days.
Jordi Hereu highlighted the importance of increasing spending per visitor, which helps modernise, make the sector more sustainable and create more jobs in tourism. He also pointed out the positive impact on tourism in inland areas, which is growing faster than coastal areas.
The UK still had the most tourists (1.9 million in May), followed by France (1.3 million) and Germany (1.2 million).There was a big increase in tourists from Ireland (20.7%) and the Netherlands (15.6%).
UK tourists spent the most in May (2.197 billion euros), followed by Germans (1.411 billion euros) and French people (991 million euros).There was a big increase in spending from Nordic countries (25.6%) and Italy (22.7%).
In May, Catalonia was the top destination, followed by the Balearic Islands and Andalusia. Madrid saw the highest growth in tourist numbers (24.3% increase). In the first five months of 2024, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, and Andalusia were the top regions for cumulative tourist expenditure.
