I feel privileged to live less than an hour from here. And yes, Estepona is one of my favourite towns on the coast!
Living in Benalmádena, I can come here for a day, walk through the old town, spend time beside the sea and return home feeling as though I have had a small holiday.
On my latest visit in October, it was the little things that stayed with me: the smell of grilled fish, fresh fruit outside the shops, flowers spilling from pots and people taking their time over coffee.
As a father of three, I also noticed something else. Everywhere I walked, there seemed to be another playground or somewhere for families to spend time together.
But what is Estepona like beyond those first impressions? Where is it, what can you do here, and could you imagine making it your home?
Here is my personal guide, with practical information for anyone planning a visit or considering a move.

Where Is Estepona in Spain?
Estepona is in the province of Málaga, in Andalucía, on Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast. It sits on the western Costa del Sol, west of Marbella and east of Casares and Manilva.
That location makes it a useful base for exploring this part of southern Spain. You can spend time in the town itself or head towards neighbouring coastal destinations and inland villages.

Spain’s official tourism guide to Estepona is a useful introduction to its setting and attractions. spain.info
One important distinction for anyone researching accommodation or property: Estepona town and the wider Estepona municipality are not interchangeable. Always check the exact address before assuming you can walk to the old town or promenade.
Watch My Estepona Video Tour
In my video, I explore Estepona on foot and by car, visiting the marina, Playa del Cristo, the promenade, parks and residential neighbourhoods.

You will also see the quieter streets around Parque del Carmen and my impressions of areas such as La Gaspara and Valle Romano.

It is a chance to see the spaces between the attractions—the streets, walking routes and surroundings that help you picture everyday life here.
What Is Estepona Like?
For me, Estepona feels welcoming, colourful and easy to enjoy at a walking pace.

During my visit, I saw people exercising beside the sea, chatting outside cafés and cycling through town. I noticed well-maintained planting, freshly improved streets and public spaces that invited people to stop rather than simply pass through.
That was my experience on an October day. Summer crowds, traffic and noise can create a different atmosphere, so I would always recommend visiting in more than one season before deciding to move.
A Town With Andalusian Character
Estepona’s old town is one of its defining attractions. Spain’s official tourism website highlights its whitewashed houses and streets decorated with flowerpots. spain.info
What I enjoy is how naturally those streets fit into a day here. You can wander, stop for something to eat and continue towards the waterfront without needing a tightly organised itinerary.
My advice is simple: leave yourself time to get a little distracted.
What to Do in Estepona

Explore Estepona Old Town
Start with a walk through the old town rather than rushing straight to the beach.
Look at the smaller streets, sit in a square and stop somewhere that catches your attention. This is the part of Estepona where slowing down makes the visit better.
For anyone wondering what to see in Estepona, the old town is where I would begin.
Walk Along the Promenade
The promenade was one of my favourite parts of filming.
People were walking, exercising, drinking coffee and looking out to sea. It reminded me that the attraction of coastal living often comes down to ordinary routines.
Would you use this walk every morning? Would you come here after work or bring the children after school?
Those questions tell you more about whether a place suits you than a list of attractions alone.
Spend Time at Playa del Cristo

Playa del Cristo has a different feel from the central waterfront. It is a sheltered cove near the marina, and Estepona’s official tourism website describes it as suitable for children. The same source notes that weekends can be busy. Turismo Estepona
I could understand the family appeal when I visited. People were still enjoying the water in mid-October, and the setting felt inviting.
Of course, conditions change. Check the weather and sea conditions on the day, particularly when visiting with children.
Visit Estepona Marina
The marina gives you another side of the town: boats, places to eat and an atmosphere that encourages a long lunch.
In my video, I combine a visit to Playa del Cristo with a walk around the port. The official tourism website places the marina and fishing port approximately 500 metres from the beach. Turismo Estepona
That makes the two a convenient combination for a relaxed day out.
Discover the Parks
Parque de los Niños and Parque del Carmen both feature in my visit.
At Parque del Carmen, I particularly enjoyed the fountains and waterfall, with another playground nearby. Around the residential streets, I found places where I could imagine stopping for coffee while the children enjoyed time outdoors.
As a parent, these are the details I remember. They make a town easier to enjoy as a family.
Follow the Mural Route
If you enjoy exploring beyond the obvious visitor spots, look up Estepona’s outdoor murals.
The town’s tourism website provides an official mural guide, helping you build a walk around the artworks. Turismo Estepona
It is another reason to venture beyond the beachfront and explore different streets.
Estepona Weather: What Should You Expect?

My October visit included sunshine, outdoor dining and people enjoying the beach. It was a lovely reminder of why I enjoy living on the Costa del Sol.
However, a sunny video captures one day. If you are planning a trip, check the forecast rather than relying on seasonal expectations.
For current Estepona weather, use the AEMET forecast for Estepona, Spain’s official meteorological service. AEMET also notes that conditions can vary within a municipality because of geographical and altitude differences. AEMET. Gobierno de España
If you are considering living here, visit during cooler weather too. Pay attention to how a potential home feels indoors, including natural light, ventilation and heating.
How Far Is Estepona From Málaga Airport?

As a practical planning estimate, allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half by car, depending on your destination, route and traffic. Check live directions for your actual journey.
The coastal A-7 and toll AP-7 provide different route options. In the video, I explain why I enjoy driving along the A-7, particularly for the views along the way.
You can also travel by bus. Airport operator Aena confirms an Avanza connection between Málaga Airport and Estepona. Check current departures before booking around a flight. Aena
If you are staying outside the centre, remember to plan the final journey from the bus stop to your accommodation.
Is Estepona Expensive?

That depends on whether you mean a day out, a holiday or buying a home.
My day involved pleasures such as walking, exploring parks and spending time beside the sea. Your holiday budget will depend much more on accommodation, restaurants, transport and the season you choose.
Property is a separate question—and it deserves a closer look.
Estepona Property Prices
Idealista’s September 2026 report shows an asking-price indicator of €5,021 per square metre for Estepona, an annual increase of 17.1%. Its district figures vary substantially, showing why one town-wide number cannot describe every neighbourhood. idealista
You can check the latest figures in the Idealista Estepona property price report.
These are advertised-price indicators, rather than a valuation of an individual home. Condition, location, usable space and running costs still need careful comparison.
If your visit turns into a serious property search, you can explore properties for sale in Estepona through Costa Prime Realty, the agency I founded. Compare the precise locations alongside the photographs and prices.
Could You Live in Estepona?

For Families
The outdoor spaces made a strong impression on me, but choosing a family home requires a practical plan.
Start with school availability and the daily journey. Then consider activities, shopping and whether you would need to drive for most errands.
A convenient family location is one that works on a busy weekday, as well as a sunny weekend.
For Retirement
For retirement, I would prioritise comfortable access to everyday services.
Test the walk to shops and cafés. Look closely at stairs, gradients, lifts and the upkeep of the building. Consider whether you would enjoy the neighbourhood throughout the year.
Sometimes the most valuable feature is being able to leave the car at home.
For a Second Home
Think about how you will actually use it.
Do you want to arrive and walk everywhere? Or would you prefer more space in a residential setting and be happy to drive?
Neither choice is automatically better. The right one depends on your habits.
What I Would Check Before Choosing an Area

My personal preference leans towards western Estepona or slightly inland, where I enjoyed the peaceful surroundings during filming.
But I would approach every address individually. Before committing, I would:
- Walk the routes to shops, the beach and cafés.
- Visit in the evening to assess noise.
- Check parking when residents are home.
- Investigate nearby construction.
- Compare ongoing ownership costs.
- Test the journeys I would make every week.
Public projects can also affect your experience. The Estepona Town Hall website provides municipal news and infrastructure updates, useful when researching a particular neighbourhood.
Is Estepona Worth Visiting?

For me, absolutely.
I enjoy the old town, the waterfront and the possibility of spending a day here without feeling the need to rush. On this visit, the strongest memories were the simplest ones: grilled fish, colourful streets, children playing and people enjoying their morning.
I can show you the buildings and beaches through a camera. The atmosphere is something you should experience yourself.
Come for a walk, leave time for lunch and explore beyond the first street that catches your eye. You may understand why Estepona has become one of my favourite towns on the Costa del Sol.
